Objectives

The main objective of the NanoBat project is to surpass currently available non-destructive quality testing methods for Li-ion and beyond Lithium batteries through a novel nanotechnology toolbox.

To this end, we target the following components:

  • New RF-nanoscale broadband impedance microscopy, scanning electrochemical and microwave microscopy to measure local activity of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and a chip-based nanoscale sensor
  • Dielectric resonator scanner for permittivity and conductivity of nanometre thick layers ensuring a later homogenous growth of the SEI
  • SEI self-discharge current (SDC) measurement method to speed up cell-testing in pilot lines
  • Inline impedance spectroscopy module with automated calibration algorithm for quality testing before module packing

Calibration, Modelling & Data Analytics

  • Non-linear equivalent circuit models and impedance calibration
  • Data analysis scripts and evaluation soware including GHz 2D-dielectric-resonator calibration and modelling with finite dierences directly in time domain (FDTD)
  • Automated battery classification based on self-discharge current (SDC) using Bayes statistical learning and a-priori pilot-line information
  • Standard operating procedures (SOP) for real-time and in-line SDC and high-frequency impedance and round robin tests with international metrology community
